What yoga class should I do?

Vinyassa/Flow Yoga
Students coordinate movement with breath to flow from one pose to the next. A more physical practice to explore the body’s capacity for strength and flexibility.
Hatha Yoga
Concentrates on physical health and mental well-being, holding each pose for several breaths. Hatha yoga tends to be gentler and slower-paced than Vinyasa.
Yin Yoga
A slow and passive style of yoga, done mostly on the floor in seated or lying-down postures. A beautiful style of yoga that is suitable for almost all levels of students.
Vin Yin
The best of both worlds… A little bit of meditation, Vinyasa Flow, breathe work and then a few yin style poses, ending in our wonderful savasana!
Restorative
Heal the body, mind, and spirit through a gentle class of movement. Each pose (Asana) is held longer and beautifully supported by props that allow you to completely relax.
Foundation/Beginners
This class is fantastic for not only new yogis starting out on their yoga journey, but also for those wanting to get back to the basics.

  • The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj, means to yoke or bind, and is often translated as ‘union’ or a method of discipline. A male who practices yoga is called a yogi, a female practitioner, a yogini.

  • Hatha is also interpreted as ha meaning ‘sun’ and tha meaning ‘moon’.

This refers to the balance of masculine aspects — active, hot, sun — and feminine aspects — receptive, cool, moon — within all of us. Hatha yoga is a path toward creating balance and uniting opposites. In our physical bodies we develop a balance of strength and flexibility. We also learn to balance our effort and surrender in each pose.

  • Om is a mantra, or vibration, that is traditionally chanted at the beginning and end of yoga sessions. It is said to be the sound of the universe. At Yoga Mantra & Wellness Centre, you will be welcome to join in or listen to the vibration. You will join in when you feel comfortable to do so!

  • Yoga is a wonderful interest or relaxation — even if you only practice for one hour a week, you will experience the benefits of this amazing practice. If you can do more than that, you will certainly experience more benefits. We suggest starting with two or three times a week, for 45 minutes to an hour. You will likely find that after a while your desire to practice expands naturally and you will find yourself doing more and more… its addictive!

  • Yoga is not a religion. It is a philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 years ago. It is said to be Patanjali, who wrote the Yoga Sutra. These scriptures provide a framework for spiritual growth and mastery over the physical and mental body. Yoga sometimes interweaves other philosophies such as Hinduism or Buddhism, but it is not necessary to study those paths in order to practice or study yoga.

  • This is a very gentle, healing pose that is often used during a yoga class to stretch the targeted area and to stretch and relax the body part. It is a calming class/poses that can also help relieve fatigue and stress.

  • Vinyasa/flow classes construct a sequence of poses together to make a cycle of movement and breath. Most of the time vinyasa teachers have the discretion to arrange the progression of poses in their own ways. In vinyasa yoga, each movement is synchronized to a breath, one breath with one movement. It is strength based with mindfulness of connecting breath, mind, and spirit as one.

  • Vin Yin Yoga, also referred to as Yin Yang Yoga, is a yoga sequence that combines Vinyasa Yoga and Yin Yoga. This is achieved with Vinyasa as the first half of the sequence, focusing on breath and strength and Yin Yoga as the second half of the class. Yin being the focus of lengthen and stretching the connective tissue with poses being held for at least 4 minutes, up to 6 minutes long.

  • Yin Yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga, incorporating principles of traditional Chinese medicine, with asanas (postures) that are held for longer periods of time than in other styles. For beginners, asanas may be held from 45 seconds to two minutes; more advanced practitioners may stay in one asana for five to 7 minutes or more. Yin is concentrating on ‘target areas’ of the body – lengthening of the muscles with the chance to be still, be present, and work within while you breathe and stretch deeply and create more space in mind and body. Targets connective tissues including fascia, bones, and joints.
